# Fortune cookie vs MapGenie

The clearest difference is price: MapGenie at Free against Fortune cookie's $1.99. MapGenie also leads on rating (4.6 vs 3.0) and update cadence (every 2 months vs every 27 months). Fortune cookie's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 1) and ads (none vs shown). On device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

MapGenie is free to download; Fortune cookie costs $1.99 up front. MapGenie sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Fortune cookie asks for nothing beyond the download.

MapGenie holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 3.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: MapGenie has 1.5K ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 50% of Fortune cookie's written reviews are positive against 34% of MapGenie's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Fortune cookie ships an update every 27 months, MapGenie every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 14, 2026 and October 21, 2026 respectively.
