# altimeter professional vs Compass Maps

The clearest difference is rating: Compass Maps at 4.6 against altimeter professional's 4.1. Compass Maps also leads on ads (none vs shown) and update cadence (every 4 weeks vs every 67 months). altimeter professional's advantage is monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases). On price, review sentiment, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. altimeter professional sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per month and Compass Maps sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $7.99 per year. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Compass Maps holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 4.1. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Compass Maps has 670 ratings behind it against 27, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 61% of altimeter professional's written reviews are positive against 56% of Compass Maps's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

altimeter professional ships an update every 67 months, Compass Maps every 4 weeks. The most recent releases landed on November 6, 2026 and November 3, 2026 respectively.
