# Instaread vs Light Novel

Instaread and Light Novel both sit at 4.6 stars, but that hides the real split: 78% of Light Novel's written reviews are positive against 40% of Instaread's. Light Novel also leads on monetization model (free with in-app purchases vs subscription) and update cadence (weekly vs every 2 months). Instaread's advantage is ratings volume (9.3K vs 348). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Instaread sells 9 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per month and Light Novel sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $5.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.6 for Instaread against 4.5 for Light Novel. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Instaread has 9.3K ratings behind it against 348, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 40% of Instaread's written reviews are positive against 78% of Light Novel's.

Instaread ships an update every 2 months, Light Novel weekly. The most recent releases landed on October 27, 2026 and October 25, 2026 respectively.
