# Boxcar Transit vs Theory

Boxcar Transit and Theory both sit at 4.4 stars, but that hides the real split: 84% of Boxcar Transit's written reviews are positive against 18% of Theory's. Boxcar Transit also leads on ads (none vs shown) and monetization model (ad-supported vs free with in-app purchases). Theory's advantage is ratings volume (912 vs 117). On price, rating, update cadence and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.

Theory holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 4.4. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Theory has 912 ratings behind it against 117, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 84% of Boxcar Transit's written reviews are positive against 18% of Theory's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Both ship on a similar rhythm, roughly every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 15, 2026 and October 14, 2026 respectively.
