# Hg vs Canteen

The clearest difference is rating: Canteen at 5.0 against Hg's 4.3. Canteen also leads on monetization model (ad-supported vs free with in-app purchases). Hg's advantage is ratings volume (260 vs 5) and update cadence (every 2 weeks vs monthly). On price, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.

Canteen holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Hg has 260 ratings behind it against 5, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 47% of Hg's written reviews are positive against 33% of Canteen's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Hg ships an update every 2 weeks, Canteen monthly. The most recent releases landed on October 29, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
