# Lightning VPN vs Speed VPN

The clearest difference is monetization model: Speed VPN at freemium against Lightning VPN's subscription. Speed VPN also leads on ads (none vs shown) and review sentiment (83% vs 70%). Lightning VPN's advantage is ratings volume (2.1K vs 67) and rating (4.6 vs 4.4). On price, update cadence, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Lightning VPN sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $5.99 per month and Speed VPN sells 9 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Lightning VPN holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 4.4. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Lightning VPN has 2.1K ratings behind it against 67, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 70% of Lightning VPN's written reviews are positive against 83% of Speed VPN's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Lightning VPN ships an update every 3 weeks, Speed VPN every 6 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 20, 2026 and October 22, 2026 respectively.
