# Original Backgammon vs Backgammon HD

The clearest difference is update cadence: Backgammon HD at monthly against Original Backgammon's every 5 months. Backgammon HD also leads on rating (3.5 vs 3.3) and ratings volume (19 vs 3). Original Backgammon's advantage is review sentiment (33% vs 25%). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.

Backgammon HD holds the better App Store score, 3.5 against 3.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Backgammon HD has 19 ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 33% of Original Backgammon's written reviews are positive against 25% of Backgammon HD's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Original Backgammon ships an update every 5 months, Backgammon HD monthly. The most recent releases landed on October 6, 2026 and October 2, 2026 respectively.
