# VPN vs Online Shield

The clearest difference is monetization model: VPN at free with in-app purchases against Online Shield's subscription. VPN also leads on review sentiment (90% vs 55%) and ratings volume (2.1M vs 8K). Online Shield's advantage is iOS requirement (14.0 vs 16.0). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. VPN sells 10 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per 7 days and Online Shield sells 8 in-app purchases, starting at $5.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.6 for VPN against 4.5 for Online Shield. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: VPN has 2.1M ratings behind it against 8K, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 90% of VPN's written reviews are positive against 55% of Online Shield's.

VPN ships an update weekly, Online Shield fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on November 1, 2026 and October 30, 2026 respectively.
