# SIMO vs Proton VPN

The clearest difference is update cadence: Proton VPN at every 2 weeks against SIMO's every 2 months. Proton VPN also leads on ratings volume (129K vs 3.4K) and chart position (#10 vs unranked). SIMO's advantage is iOS requirement (15.1 vs 17.0). On price, rating, review sentiment and ads there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. SIMO sells 2 one-off in-app purchases and Proton VPN sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $11.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.8 for SIMO against 4.6 for Proton VPN. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Proton VPN has 129K ratings behind it against 3.4K, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 57% of SIMO's written reviews are positive against 54% of Proton VPN's.

SIMO ships an update every 2 months, Proton VPN every 2 weeks. The most recent releases landed on November 2, 2026 and November 5, 2026 respectively.
