# Kernel vs Blitz Chess Clock

The clearest difference is monetization model: Blitz Chess Clock at free with in-app purchases against Kernel's subscription. Kernel's advantage is update cadence (every 2 weeks vs every 3 months) and ratings volume (229 vs 6). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Kernel sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per 7 days and Blitz Chess Clock sells 3 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.0 for Kernel against 4.2 for Blitz Chess Clock. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Kernel has 229 ratings behind it against 6, so its average is the more settled of the two.

Kernel ships an update every 2 weeks, Blitz Chess Clock every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on November 2, 2026 and November 3, 2026 respectively.
