# Kernel vs Blitz Chess Clock

The clearest difference is monetization model: Blitz Chess Clock at free with in-app purchases against Kernel's subscription. Blitz Chess Clock also leads on rating (4.2 vs 4.0). Kernel's advantage is update cadence (every 3 weeks vs every 3 months) and ratings volume (224 vs 6). On price, ads, in-app purchases and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Kernel sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per 7 days and Blitz Chess Clock sells 3 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Blitz Chess Clock holds the better App Store score, 4.2 against 4.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Kernel has 224 ratings behind it against 6, so its average is the more settled of the two.

Kernel ships an update every 3 weeks, Blitz Chess Clock every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on October 14, 2026 and October 7, 2026 respectively.
