# NPMA Field Guide PRO vs Insecta

The clearest difference is monetization model: NPMA Field Guide PRO at free with in-app purchases against Insecta's subscription. NPMA Field Guide PRO also leads on review sentiment (50% vs 40%) and iOS requirement (12.0 vs 26.0). Insecta's advantage is update cadence (every 2 months vs every 23 months) and ratings volume (145 vs 6). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. NPMA Field Guide PRO sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $8.99 per year and Insecta sells 5 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Insecta holds the better App Store score, 3.9 against 3.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Insecta has 145 ratings behind it against 6, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 50% of NPMA Field Guide PRO's written reviews are positive against 40% of Insecta's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

NPMA Field Guide PRO ships an update every 23 months, Insecta every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 15, 2026 and October 7, 2026 respectively.
