# Hotham vs Play AFL

The clearest difference is rating: Hotham at 5.0 against Play AFL's 4.2. Play AFL's advantage is monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases) and review sentiment (65% vs 41%). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.

Hotham holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Play AFL has 13 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 41% of Hotham's written reviews are positive against 65% of Play AFL's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Hotham ships an update every 10 days, Play AFL fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on October 12, 2026 and October 18, 2026 respectively.
