# Musical Scale Practice vs Ear training

The clearest difference is rating: Ear training at 4.5 against Musical Scale Practice's 3.8. Ear training also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 1) and update cadence (every 8 months vs every 32 months). Musical Scale Practice's advantage is review sentiment (50% vs 33%). On price, ads, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Musical Scale Practice sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Ear training asks for nothing beyond the download.

Ear training holds the better App Store score, 4.5 against 3.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Ear training has 248 ratings behind it against 16, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 50% of Musical Scale Practice's written reviews are positive against 33% of Ear training's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Musical Scale Practice ships an update every 32 months, Ear training every 8 months. Both last shipped on November 3, 2026.
