# Mullvad VPN vs VPN

The clearest difference is monetization model: VPN at free with in-app purchases against Mullvad VPN's subscription. VPN also leads on update cadence (weekly vs monthly) and ratings volume (7.3K vs 1.5K). Mullvad VPN's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and chart position (#50 vs unranked). On price, rating, review sentiment and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Mullvad VPN sells 4 one-off in-app purchases and VPN sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.1 for Mullvad VPN against 4.2 for VPN. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 1.5K and 7.3K respectively. Written reviews are what separate them: 58% of Mullvad VPN's written reviews are positive against 54% of VPN's.

Mullvad VPN ships an update monthly, VPN weekly. The most recent releases landed on November 3, 2026 and November 6, 2026 respectively.
