# Shut the Box vs Mex Train

The clearest difference is rating: Shut the Box at 5.0 against Mex Train's 3.5. Shut the Box also leads on update cadence (every 3 months vs every 16 months). Mex Train's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 9) and ads (none vs shown). On price and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Shut the Box sells 9 one-off in-app purchases. Mex Train asks for nothing beyond the download.

Shut the Box holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 3.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Mex Train has 26 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 33% of Shut the Box's written reviews are positive against 56% of Mex Train's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Shut the Box ships an update every 3 months, Mex Train every 16 months. Both last shipped on November 3, 2026.
