# Task vs Protagonist

The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Task at none against Protagonist's 1. Protagonist's advantage is rating (5.0 vs 4.5) and update cadence (every 2 weeks vs every 16 months). On price, review sentiment and ads there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Protagonist sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $19.99 per year. Task asks for nothing beyond the download.

Protagonist holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Protagonist has 35 ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews split almost evenly too, at 100% and 100% positive.

Task ships an update every 16 months, Protagonist every 2 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 8, 2026 and October 22, 2026 respectively.
