# Then vs Hourly Journal

The clearest difference is update cadence: Then at every 2 weeks against Hourly Journal's every 3 months. Then also leads on review sentiment (88% vs 78%) and ratings volume (24 vs 8). Hourly Journal's advantage is rating (4.9 vs 4.7). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Then sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per month and Hourly Journal sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Hourly Journal holds the better App Store score, 4.9 against 4.7. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 24 and 8 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 88% of Then's written reviews are positive against 78% of Hourly Journal's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Then ships an update every 2 weeks, Hourly Journal every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on October 24, 2026 and October 25, 2026 respectively.
