# Forest Companion App vs MapGenie

The clearest difference is update cadence: Forest Companion App at every 3 weeks against MapGenie's every 26 months. MapGenie's advantage is rating (4.8 vs 4.5) and ratings volume (2.6K vs 147). On price, review sentiment, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Forest Companion App sells 14 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per 7 days and MapGenie sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

MapGenie holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: MapGenie has 2.6K ratings behind it against 147, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 50% of Forest Companion App's written reviews are positive against 56% of MapGenie's.

Forest Companion App ships an update every 3 weeks, MapGenie every 26 months. Both last shipped on October 30, 2026.
