# black.com vs Encrypted Email

The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Encrypted Email at none against black.com's 1. Encrypted Email also leads on ratings volume (76 vs 9) and iOS requirement (13.4 vs 16.4). black.com's advantage is review sentiment (67% vs 42%). On price, rating, update cadence and ads there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. black.com sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $4.99 per month. Encrypted Email asks for nothing beyond the download.

Encrypted Email holds the better App Store score, 3.8 against 3.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Encrypted Email has 76 ratings behind it against 9, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 67% of black.com's written reviews are positive against 42% of Encrypted Email's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

black.com ships an update every 6 weeks, Encrypted Email every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on September 17, 2026 and October 2, 2026 respectively.
