# Motion vs Simple Journaling

The clearest difference is rating: Simple Journaling at 5.0 against Motion's 4.1. Simple Journaling also leads on monetization model (freemium vs subscription) and ads (none vs shown). Motion's advantage is update cadence (weekly vs every 2 months) and ratings volume (1.9K vs 1). On price, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Motion sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $44.99 per month and Simple Journaling sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $4.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Simple Journaling holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.1. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Motion has 1.9K ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two.

Motion ships an update weekly, Simple Journaling every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 25, 2026 and October 7, 2026 respectively.
