# Clock vs Chess Timer

The clearest difference is rating: Chess Timer at 4.2 against Clock's 2.5. Chess Timer also leads on update cadence (monthly vs every 9 months). Clock's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 3) and ratings volume (20K vs 37). On price, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Chess Timer sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per 7 days. Clock asks for nothing beyond the download.

Chess Timer holds the better App Store score, 4.2 against 2.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Clock has 20K ratings behind it against 37, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 14% of Clock's written reviews are positive against 0% of Chess Timer's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Clock ships an update every 9 months, Chess Timer monthly. The most recent releases landed on October 3, 2026 and September 21, 2026 respectively.
