# MelodEar vs Basic Pitch

The clearest difference is price: MelodEar at Free against Basic Pitch's $1.99. MelodEar also leads on review sentiment (77% vs 67%) and ratings volume (68 vs 11). Basic Pitch's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 6) and rating (5.0 vs 4.6). On update cadence, ads, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

MelodEar is free to download; Basic Pitch costs $1.99 up front. MelodEar sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per year. Basic Pitch asks for nothing beyond the download.

Basic Pitch holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: MelodEar has 68 ratings behind it against 11, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 77% of MelodEar's written reviews are positive against 67% of Basic Pitch's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

MelodEar ships an update every 2 months, Basic Pitch every 5 weeks. The most recent releases landed on September 21, 2026 and September 29, 2026 respectively.
