# Dictionary.com vs Advanced Dictionary

Dictionary.com and Advanced Dictionary both sit at 4.8 stars, but that hides the real split: 91% of Advanced Dictionary's written reviews are positive against 26% of Dictionary.com's. Advanced Dictionary also leads on iOS requirement (13.0 vs 16.0). Dictionary.com's advantage is price (Free vs $14.99) and update cadence (every 3 weeks vs every 6 months). On rating, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Dictionary.com is free to download; Advanced Dictionary costs $14.99 up front. Dictionary.com sells 9 one-off in-app purchases and Advanced Dictionary sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.8 for Dictionary.com against 4.9 for Advanced Dictionary. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Dictionary.com has 328K ratings behind it against 25, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 26% of Dictionary.com's written reviews are positive against 91% of Advanced Dictionary's.

Dictionary.com ships an update every 3 weeks, Advanced Dictionary every 6 months. The most recent releases landed on October 21, 2026 and October 9, 2026 respectively.
