# Dictionary.com vs English Dictionary

Dictionary.com and English Dictionary both sit at 4.8 stars, but that hides the real split: 75% of English Dictionary's written reviews are positive against 26% of Dictionary.com's. English Dictionary also leads on ads (none vs shown) and update cadence (every 10 days vs every 3 weeks). Dictionary.com's advantage is monetization model (free with in-app purchases vs subscription) and ratings volume (328K vs 1.2K). On price, rating, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Dictionary.com sells 9 one-off in-app purchases and English Dictionary sells 9 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Dictionary.com holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Dictionary.com has 328K ratings behind it against 1.2K, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 26% of Dictionary.com's written reviews are positive against 75% of English Dictionary's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Dictionary.com ships an update every 3 weeks, English Dictionary every 10 days. The most recent releases landed on November 1, 2026 and October 30, 2026 respectively.
