# Learn Chinese Essentials vs Flashcards

The clearest difference is review sentiment: Flashcards at 100% against Learn Chinese Essentials's 44%. Flashcards also leads on update cadence (every 3 days vs every 5 months) and monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases). Learn Chinese Essentials's advantage is rating (4.0 vs 2.8) and ads (none vs shown). On price, ratings volume, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.

Learn Chinese Essentials holds the better App Store score, 4.0 against 2.8. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 2 and 4 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 44% of Learn Chinese Essentials's written reviews are positive against 100% of Flashcards's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Learn Chinese Essentials ships an update every 5 months, Flashcards every 3 days. The most recent releases landed on October 12, 2026 and October 15, 2026 respectively.
