# TanZen HD vs Root Down

The clearest difference is price: Root Down at Free against TanZen HD's $2.99. TanZen HD's advantage is rating (4.7 vs 4.0) and update cadence (every 2 months vs every 27 months). On review sentiment, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Root Down is free to download; TanZen HD costs $2.99 up front. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.

TanZen HD holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: TanZen HD has 245 ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 96% of TanZen HD's written reviews are positive against 100% of Root Down's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

TanZen HD ships an update every 2 months, Root Down every 27 months. The most recent releases landed on July 26, 2026 and September 23, 2026 respectively.
