# Avenza Maps vs OnPoint Trails

The clearest difference is monetization model: Avenza Maps at free with in-app purchases against OnPoint Trails's subscription. Avenza Maps also leads on ratings volume (128K vs 12) and chart position (#17 vs unranked). OnPoint Trails's advantage is review sentiment (83% vs 51%) and update cadence (every 3 weeks vs every 2 months). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Avenza Maps sells 10 in-app purchases, starting at $34.99 per year and OnPoint Trails sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $39.99 per year. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.8 for Avenza Maps against 4.7 for OnPoint Trails. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Avenza Maps has 128K ratings behind it against 12, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 51% of Avenza Maps's written reviews are positive against 83% of OnPoint Trails's.

Avenza Maps ships an update every 2 months, OnPoint Trails every 3 weeks. The most recent releases landed on November 6, 2026 and November 4, 2026 respectively.
