# Organic Nomenclature vs Functional Groups

The clearest difference is update cadence: Functional Groups at every 4 months against Organic Nomenclature's every 21 months. Functional Groups also leads on review sentiment (100% vs 88%). Organic Nomenclature's advantage is ratings volume (659 vs 23) and iOS requirement (11.0 vs 15.0). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Organic Nomenclature sells 2 one-off in-app purchases and Functional Groups sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.7 for Organic Nomenclature against 4.9 for Functional Groups. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Organic Nomenclature has 659 ratings behind it against 23, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 88% of Organic Nomenclature's written reviews are positive against 100% of Functional Groups's.

Organic Nomenclature ships an update every 21 months, Functional Groups every 4 months. Both last shipped on October 24, 2026.
