# NetShade vs VPN Portal

The clearest difference is review sentiment: VPN Portal at 100% against NetShade's 50%. VPN Portal also leads on monetization model (freemium vs subscription) and update cadence (every 9 days vs every 13 months). NetShade's advantage is ratings volume (177 vs 12) and iOS requirement (13.0 vs 17.0). On price, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. NetShade sells 2 one-off in-app purchases and VPN Portal sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

VPN Portal holds the better App Store score, 4.9 against 4.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: NetShade has 177 ratings behind it against 12, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 50% of NetShade's written reviews are positive against 100% of VPN Portal's.

NetShade ships an update every 13 months, VPN Portal every 9 days. The most recent releases landed on November 1, 2026 and November 5, 2026 respectively.
