# The Scotsman Newspaper vs Ruby

The clearest difference is monetization model: Ruby at free with in-app purchases against The Scotsman Newspaper's subscription. Ruby also leads on rating (5.0 vs 4.7) and review sentiment (50% vs 40%). The Scotsman Newspaper's advantage is ratings volume (185 vs 4) and iOS requirement (17.0 vs 26.0). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. The Scotsman Newspaper sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per month and Ruby sells 9 in-app purchases, starting at $0.69 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Ruby holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: The Scotsman Newspaper has 185 ratings behind it against 4, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 40% of The Scotsman Newspaper's written reviews are positive against 50% of Ruby's.

The Scotsman Newspaper ships an update every 4 months, Ruby every 5 months. The most recent releases landed on October 24, 2026 and October 26, 2026 respectively.
