# Chinese Calendar vs SmartScanner

The clearest difference is rating: SmartScanner at 4.7 against Chinese Calendar's 2.0. SmartScanner also leads on review sentiment (40% vs 0%) and ratings volume (1.2K vs 5). Chinese Calendar's advantage is monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases) and iOS requirement (7.0 vs 15.0). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Chinese Calendar sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and SmartScanner sells 10 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

SmartScanner holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 2.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: SmartScanner has 1.2K ratings behind it against 5, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 0% of Chinese Calendar's written reviews are positive against 40% of SmartScanner's.

Both ship on a similar rhythm, roughly every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 20, 2026 and October 30, 2026 respectively.
