# Lighter vs iON Classic

The clearest difference is rating: Lighter at 4.4 against iON Classic's 3.7. Lighter also leads on ratings volume (774 vs 3). iON Classic's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 3) and review sentiment (67% vs 47%). On price, update cadence, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Lighter sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per month. iON Classic asks for nothing beyond the download.

Lighter holds the better App Store score, 4.4 against 3.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Lighter has 774 ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 47% of Lighter's written reviews are positive against 67% of iON Classic's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Lighter ships an update every 4 months, iON Classic every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on October 12, 2026 and September 22, 2026 respectively.
