# AppleInsider vs iDev

The clearest difference is rating: iDev at 5.0 against AppleInsider's 3.3. iDev also leads on monetization model (free with in-app purchases vs subscription) and update cadence (every 2 months vs every 8 months). AppleInsider's advantage is review sentiment (29% vs 0%) and ratings volume (49 vs 3). On price, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. AppleInsider sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per month and iDev sells 5 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

iDev holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 3.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: AppleInsider has 49 ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 29% of AppleInsider's written reviews are positive against 0% of iDev's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

AppleInsider ships an update every 8 months, iDev every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 13, 2026 and September 22, 2026 respectively.
