# Scenic Map vs Topo Reader

The clearest difference is monetization model: Scenic Map at free against Topo Reader's subscription. Scenic Map also leads on review sentiment (67% vs 50%). Topo Reader's advantage is ratings volume (174 vs 3) and iOS requirement (14.0 vs 16.1). On price, rating, update cadence and ads there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Scenic Map sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Topo Reader sells 3 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.7 for Scenic Map against 4.6 for Topo Reader. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Topo Reader has 174 ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 67% of Scenic Map's written reviews are positive against 50% of Topo Reader's.

Both ship on a similar rhythm, roughly every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on September 22, 2026 and September 29, 2026 respectively.
