# MapGenie vs Middle Earth Explorer

MapGenie and Middle Earth Explorer both sit at 4.6 stars, but that hides the real split: 67% of Middle Earth Explorer's written reviews are positive against 34% of MapGenie's. Middle Earth Explorer also leads on monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases) and update cadence (fortnightly vs every 2 months). MapGenie's advantage is ratings volume (1.5K vs 16) and iOS requirement (15.0 vs 26.0). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. MapGenie sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Middle Earth Explorer sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.6 for MapGenie against 4.6 for Middle Earth Explorer. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: MapGenie has 1.5K ratings behind it against 16, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 34% of MapGenie's written reviews are positive against 67% of Middle Earth Explorer's.

MapGenie ships an update every 2 months, Middle Earth Explorer fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on October 21, 2026 and October 25, 2026 respectively.
