# MAX VPN vs Shield VPN

The clearest difference is rating: Shield VPN at 4.6 against MAX VPN's 3.0. Shield VPN also leads on ratings volume (726 vs 2). MAX VPN's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 2) and ads (none vs shown). On price, update cadence, chart position and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Shield VPN sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $6.99 per 7 days. MAX VPN asks for nothing beyond the download.

Shield VPN holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 3.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Shield VPN has 726 ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 50% of MAX VPN's written reviews are positive against 40% of Shield VPN's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

MAX VPN ships an update fortnightly, Shield VPN every 8 days. Both last shipped on October 25, 2026.
