# Chess Scanner vs Unlock

The clearest difference is ads: Chess Scanner at none against Unlock's shown. Unlock's advantage is ratings volume (3.5K vs 22) and update cadence (every 6 days vs every 3 weeks). On price, rating, review sentiment and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Chess Scanner sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per 7 days and Unlock sells 10 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 3.9 for Chess Scanner against 4.0 for Unlock. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Unlock has 3.5K ratings behind it against 22, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 60% of Chess Scanner's written reviews are positive against 58% of Unlock's.

Chess Scanner ships an update every 3 weeks, Unlock every 6 days. The most recent releases landed on October 30, 2026 and November 1, 2026 respectively.
