# Shimmerly vs The Carnivore Challenge

The clearest difference is monetization model: The Carnivore Challenge at free with in-app purchases against Shimmerly's subscription. The Carnivore Challenge also leads on ads (none vs shown) and update cadence (every 2 days vs every 5 days). Shimmerly's advantage is ratings volume (1.1K vs 23). On price, rating, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Shimmerly sells 7 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per 7 days and The Carnivore Challenge sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $59.99 per year. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.6 for Shimmerly against 4.7 for The Carnivore Challenge. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Shimmerly has 1.1K ratings behind it against 23, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 55% of Shimmerly's written reviews are positive against 67% of The Carnivore Challenge's.

Shimmerly ships an update every 5 days, The Carnivore Challenge every 2 days. The most recent releases landed on October 25, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
