# MaxU vs Scanly

The clearest difference is monetization model: MaxU at free with in-app purchases against Scanly's subscription. MaxU also leads on review sentiment (50% vs 38%) and iOS requirement (11.0 vs 16.6). Scanly's advantage is rating (4.5 vs 4.2) and ratings volume (758 vs 46). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. MaxU sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per 7 days and Scanly sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Scanly holds the better App Store score, 4.5 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Scanly has 758 ratings behind it against 46, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 50% of MaxU's written reviews are positive against 38% of Scanly's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

MaxU ships an update every 3 days, Scanly every 5 days. The most recent releases landed on October 4, 2026 and October 10, 2026 respectively.
