# Speedometer GPS vs Apex

The clearest difference is monetization model: Speedometer GPS at free with in-app purchases against Apex's subscription. Speedometer GPS also leads on update cadence (weekly vs monthly) and rating (4.7 vs 4.4). On price, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Speedometer GPS sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per 7 days and Apex sells 7 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Speedometer GPS holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.4. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Speedometer GPS has 408 ratings behind it against 25, so its average is the more settled of the two.

Speedometer GPS ships an update weekly, Apex monthly. The most recent releases landed on October 30, 2026 and November 5, 2026 respectively.
