# Language Exchange vs Backpackr

The clearest difference is monetization model: Backpackr at free against Language Exchange's freemium. Language Exchange's advantage is update cadence (every 8 days vs monthly) and ratings volume (24 vs 2). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Language Exchange sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per 7 days and Backpackr sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $4.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Backpackr holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Language Exchange has 24 ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two.

Language Exchange ships an update every 8 days, Backpackr monthly. The most recent releases landed on October 23, 2026 and October 11, 2026 respectively.
