# Video Compressor vs HippoCam

The clearest difference is monetization model: HippoCam at free against Video Compressor's free with in-app purchases. HippoCam also leads on rating (5.0 vs 4.7) and review sentiment (100% vs 83%). Video Compressor's advantage is ratings volume (121 vs 11) and device support (3 vs 1). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Video Compressor sells 5 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per 7 days and HippoCam sells 2 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

HippoCam holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Video Compressor has 121 ratings behind it against 11, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 83% of Video Compressor's written reviews are positive against 100% of HippoCam's.

Video Compressor ships an update fortnightly, HippoCam every 3 weeks. The most recent releases landed on November 8, 2026 and November 5, 2026 respectively.
