# Step Gunner vs Chess with Pip

The clearest difference is monetization model: Chess with Pip at free against Step Gunner's freemium. Chess with Pip also leads on rating (5.0 vs 4.8). Step Gunner's advantage is ratings volume (24 vs 1). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Step Gunner sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per month and Chess with Pip sells 3 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Chess with Pip holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Step Gunner has 24 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two.

Step Gunner ships an update every 5 days, Chess with Pip every 8 days. The most recent releases landed on October 17, 2026 and October 6, 2026 respectively.
