It's late, and you meant to be asleep an hour ago. Put on the rain, a box fan or a slow piano, set a timer, and let Drift play you to sleep. Every sound in Drift has its own scene, drawn live and slow enough to fall asleep to: snow over a line of pines, embers lifting off a fire, moon jellies drifting up through dark water. Watch it, or hide the controls and let it fill the screen. 34 SOUNDS, SEVEN KINDS Rain, Water, Noise, Nature, Night, Ambient and Instrumental. Thunderstorms and rain on leaves, ocean waves and a stream, a box fan and a deep drone, crickets and cicadas, a crackling fire, a singing bowl, a cat purring, even the clack of a mechanical keyboard. INSTRUMENTAL Eight calm tracks for the end of the day, from Night Piano and Violin Lullaby to Banjo Blues. Every sound in Drift loops without a seam, so there's no pause or jump to wake you. A TIMER FOR FALLING ASLEEP Choose 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, or play until you stop it. The sound fades out over the last half minute, the screen dims while it plays, and it keeps going with your phone locked. Play and pause right from the lock screen. MIX YOUR OWN Layer up to four sounds, like rain over crickets with a fan underneath, and set each one's volume. Save the sounds and mixes you reach for and start them in one tap. A NIGHTLIGHT Turn your screen into a soft, even light in one of six colors, and dim it down to a faint glow. Your sound keeps playing underneath. WHAT'S FREE AND WHAT'S PREMIUM Six sounds are free, with every timer and the mixer: Rainy Night, Ocean Waves, Forest Morning, Singing Bowl, Night Piano and Violin Lullaby. Premium opens all 34 sounds, the nightlight, and new sounds as they land. Try it free for 7 days with the yearly plan. After that it's 29.99 a year, or 3.99 a month, and you can cancel anytime. NOTHING TO SET UP No sign-up and no account. Open Drift, tap a sound, and put the phone down. Real White Noise

Real White Noise does not loop. Most sound apps play a short audio file over and over. Listen for more than a few minutes and you start to hear the seam, and once you hear it you cannot unhear it. This app builds its sound continuously for as long as you listen. Rain never falls the same way twice. The fan never comes back round to where it started. There is no loop point, because there is nothing being looped. FREE, NOT A TRIAL Brown noise, white noise, rain, ocean, a fireplace, a box fan, a heartbeat, the womb, shushing, a music box lullaby and a soft pulsing tone. No countdown, no card on file, no three days and then it stops. Free also gets you two sounds at once, the sleep timer and the night light. SLEEP TIMER THAT FADES Set fifteen minutes or an hour. The sound gets quieter over the last minute and then stops, so nothing cuts out and wakes you. Longer timers, up to eight hours, come with Pro. A LIGHT FOR THE DARK If you do not sleep in a pitch-black room, leave a slow, warm glow on the screen all night. It is dim and deliberately boring. A breathing glow, a turning starfield and a dim bedside clock are free, in three colours. AN ALARM THAT WORKS ON SILENT Set an alarm and it sounds even when your phone is on silent or in a Sleep Focus, with a wake sound you choose. It fades in rather than starting at full, so you come up out of sleep instead of being yanked out of it. Stop and Snooze are both on the screen, big enough to hit half asleep. PRO, IF YOU WANT IT The rest of the catalogue, which is most of it: pink and grey noise, thunder, a stream, crickets, a train, a washing machine, purring, slow breathing and more. Four sounds at once instead of two, tone control on each one, your own saved mixes, alarms, timers up to eight hours, and every night light scene and colour. Pay monthly, yearly, or once and never again. Every plan works with Family Sharing, so one purchase covers up to six people in your family. Buy it once for the household, not once per phone. BUILT FOR NIGHT Near-black screens, warm grey text, no white flashes, no bright blue. Nothing shouts at you at three in the morning. Leave the phone face up in the bed and the screen dims itself, so an elbow cannot change what is playing. NO ACCOUNT, NO ADS Open it and it works. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to sign in to, and no ads. Real White Noise works with the screen locked, on silent, over AirPlay, and from your Lock Screen and Control Center. Verdict
Drift and Real White Noise are too close to call on the numbers: across 6 compared parameters — price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases among them — neither pulls far enough ahead to decide it. What separates them is feature set and interface, not measurable difference.
