Comprehensive database with tens of thousands of entries including meanings, pronunciations, and compound words. • Animated Stroke Order: Watch each stroke drawn in correct order on a traditional 米字格 (mizigé) practice grid. Capture with the camera or pick from your photo library — recognition runs entirely on-device. • Handwriting Recognition: Draw a character on screen for instant recognition — useful when you remember the shape but not the reading. Powered by Google ML Kit, runs offline. • Offline Translation: Chinese ↔ Vietnamese translation via on-device ML Kit. Language model downloads once, then works fully offline forever. • Pronunciation: Built-in TTS for Mandarin Chinese and Vietnamese. Hear the proper pronunciation of any character or word. • Favorites & History: Save characters for later review. Search history is automatically tracked so you can quickly return to recent lookups. • Daily Tips & Daily Character: Curated learning tips on pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. A new featured character every day on the home screen. EDITORIAL DESIGN Inspired by traditional Han-Nom dictionaries printed on rice paper — cream paper background, soft black ink, vermilion seal accents (印章), hairline ochre rules, and italic small-caps labels. A genuine alternative to standard Material design dictionary apps that feels like holding a real reference book. OFFLINE-FIRST ARCHITECTURE All core features work without internet: • Full dictionary database bundled on-device • ML Kit translation models — one-time download, then offline forever • Stroke data cached locally after first lookup • System TTS for pronunciation • Local SQLite for favorites and history WHO IS THIS FOR • Students learning Mandarin Chinese • Calligraphy and traditional Han-Nom enthusiasts • Vietnamese learners exploring classical literature, temples, and historical sites • Researchers, translators, and language teachers • Anyone who wants to learn Chinese characters with proper writing technique and elegant design PRIVACY We collect zero personal data. All data (favorites, history) stays on your device. No account required, no login, no ads, no analytics. Learn the Mandarin people actually speak in Taiwan — five minutes a day. Most Chinese apps teach you Beijing. Jiayou teaches you Taipei: Taiwan words, Taiwan tone readings, traditional characters, and a real Taiwan voice. It's built for people who want to understand and be understood in Taiwan — travellers, students, people with Taiwanese partners and families. FIVE MINUTES A DAY Each daily lesson teaches just three new phrases and practises them until they stick: you meet a phrase, hear it, say it, then recall it again before the lesson ends. Earlier phrases come back on a spaced-repetition schedule right before you'd forget them. No 40-word lists you'll lose by Friday. KEEP YOUR STREAK • Daily streak with a week view of your progress • Earn a streak freeze every seven days, so one busy day doesn't wipe you out • Optional reminder at the time you choose — never on a day you've already practised SOUND LIKE YOU LEARNED IT IN TAIWAN • 捷運 not 地鐵. 計程車 not 出租車. 腳踏車 not 自行車. • Taiwan tone readings: 垃圾 lèsè, 星期 xīngqí, 企業 qìyè • No erhua. The particles that make you sound natural: 喔, 啦, 齁, 蛤, 耶 • Hokkien loanwords locals love: 歹勢, 好家在, 母湯 • A quick quiz that pits the Taiwan word against the Mainland one LISTEN AND SPEAK, NOT JUST READ • Listening drills with audio only — train your ear the way conversation does • Speaking drills checked on your iPhone against a Taiwan speech recogniser • Build sentences from word tiles • Roleplay real scenes: the night market, the 7-Eleven counter, the taxi, meeting the family • Quiet mode for when you're on the bus and can't talk out loud 12 UNITS, FROM HELLO TO MEETING THE FAMILY 500 phrases across 12 units: first contact, getting unstuck, numbers and money, eating, bubble tea and 7-Eleven, getting around, particles and tone, grammar, people and family, daily life, LINE and logistics, and sounding local. PRIVATE AND OFFLINE No account. No ads. No tracking. The whole course lives inside the app and works on a plane. Your progress stays on your iPhone. A NOTE ON THE VOICE Jiayou only speaks with Apple's free Chinese (Taiwan) voice. If it isn't installed yet, the app shows you exactly where to download it — rather than quietly substituting a Mainland accent.
