Stone Cabinet
Read full descriptionHide full description
Brush away the soil with your finger and dig up minerals. Display what you find in a cabinet that's all your own, polish specimens to a finer grade, and cut spare stones into gems. DIG IN TWELVE COUNTRIES Japan, the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Morocco, China, India, Madagascar, Australia, South Africa, Tanzania and Myanmar. Pick any of them on the world map; every country is open from the start. Only stones really found in that country come out, checked against museum and geological-survey sources. Each country's specialities turn up a little more often, and finding every stone from a country earns its stamp. Trace the little mound, feel the brush catch on stone, and watch rare finds glint through the dirt. Geodes come out closed. You won't know what's inside until you crack them with a hammer. COLLECT 106 minerals and gems: quartz, amethyst, jade, pyrite, fluorite, ruby, sapphire, rough diamond, ParaÃba tourmaline, kunzite, iolite, moss agate, meteorites and more. Every specimen is one of a kind, with its own size, grade (Fair to Museum) and features like double terminations, phantoms and rainbows, and you can see it in the stone. A single point, a group on rock or a cluster: how it was found changes its look too. Each find is compared with the ones you already have. The guide tells the story behind each stone's name and color, and keeps track of the localities you've dug it at. Home shows a stone of the day. Complete sets such as the twelve birthstones, rainbow gems, the quartz family and stones fallen from the sky to earn titles, and show any set off in a theme case with a named spot for each stone. "Your goals" on the home screen shows what to aim for next. POLISH AND CUT Release spare specimens for shards, then spend shards to polish a specimen by rubbing it with your finger and raise its grade (up to Fine; Superb and Museum grade only come from digging). When a stone turns up again, cut the spare rough into a gem with one tap. Rubies become ovals, emeralds get an emerald cut, opals a smooth cabochon. Each cut is graded Fair, Good, Very Good or Excellent. Your gems go in the jewel box: 54 to collect. Cut gems can be polished with shards too, one step at a time up to Very Good (no draw). Your best specimen of each kind, favorites and displayed pieces are never used. DISPLAY Tilt any specimen with your finger to take a closer look. Shine UV light on fluorite, calcite, ruby or Yooperlite and watch it glow. Your cases are glass-topped walnut cabinets with twelve compartments. Name each one, arrange your favorites, and share a picture sized for posts or stories. Every label has the locality, hardness, formula and a short fact, and the rarer stones have two. DIGS AND PURCHASES A free dig comes back every hour, up to five. Your first 15 digs are free. The only purchases are packs of 10 or 100 digs. The finds and odds for every country are shown in the app. If 19 digs in a row in the same country bring nothing rated 3 stars or better, the 20th is guaranteed to be. Digging ten bought digs at once always includes one 3-star or better. No ads. Your finds are stored on your device, and no account is needed. Specimen images are artwork made for this app; they are not photographs of real specimens. The map is based on Natural Earth (public domain). Orevana

Start with a worn pickaxe and a patch of dirt. See how deep you can get. Every swing chips rock, turns up ore and earns coin for your next upgrade. Keep digging and the mine changes around you. Play for a few minutes or settle in for a long dig. There's always another layer below.

Verdict
Stone Cabinet and Orevana are too close to call on the numbers: across 5 compared parameters — price, ads, in-app purchases and device support among them — neither pulls far enough ahead to decide it. What separates them is feature set and interface, not measurable difference.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. Stone Cabinet sells 2 one-off in-app purchases and Orevana sells 10 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
