# MEGA vs TOR Browser

The clearest difference is monetization model: MEGA at free with in-app purchases against TOR Browser's subscription. MEGA also leads on review sentiment (46% vs 31%) and chart position (#42 vs unranked). TOR Browser's advantage is ads (none vs shown). On price, rating, update cadence and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. MEGA sells 10 in-app purchases, starting at $6.49 per month and TOR Browser sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $2.49 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.6 for MEGA against 4.5 for TOR Browser. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: MEGA has 108K ratings behind it against 13K, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 46% of MEGA's written reviews are positive against 31% of TOR Browser's.

MEGA ships an update every 2 weeks, TOR Browser every 3 weeks. Both last shipped on October 11, 2026.
