# Pro Shogi vs A guide to Shogi

The clearest difference is in-app purchases: A guide to Shogi at none against Pro Shogi's 2. A guide to Shogi also leads on rating (4.5 vs 4.2) and ratings volume (92 vs 10). Pro Shogi's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and update cadence (every 2 weeks vs every 8 months). On price, review sentiment, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Pro Shogi sells 2 one-off in-app purchases. A guide to Shogi asks for nothing beyond the download.

A guide to Shogi holds the better App Store score, 4.5 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: A guide to Shogi has 92 ratings behind it against 10, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 41% of Pro Shogi's written reviews are positive against 38% of A guide to Shogi's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Pro Shogi ships an update every 2 weeks, A guide to Shogi every 8 months. Both last shipped on November 6, 2026.
