# XmlPad vs TextEdit

The clearest difference is in-app purchases: XmlPad at none against TextEdit's 3. XmlPad also leads on review sentiment (33% vs 17%) and iOS requirement (11.0 vs 26.0). TextEdit's advantage is update cadence (weekly vs every 7 months) and ratings volume (378 vs 7). On price, rating, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. TextEdit sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per month. XmlPad asks for nothing beyond the download.

XmlPad holds the better App Store score, 3.9 against 3.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: TextEdit has 378 ratings behind it against 7, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 33% of XmlPad's written reviews are positive against 17% of TextEdit's.

XmlPad ships an update every 7 months, TextEdit weekly. The most recent releases landed on September 22, 2026 and October 4, 2026 respectively.
